About Alison Bramley

Alison Barmley.  Alison started making patchwork and quilting after doing a City & Guilds fashion and design course in 1979–82. They had a project in accessories for which she made a quilted bag.

She was hooked…

After having her fourth child she made small patchwork items to sell at craft fairs, also she made quilts for the family. Initially, she used other people’s designs but, since going to Loughborough College of Art and Design in 1989–90, she usually prefers to use her own. The Loughborough course was in textile design and it was very hard work, but she achieved a distinction.

Alison draws her inspiration from all sorts of things: architecture, nature and stained glass windows (one of her favourite ways of doing cut-thought work). She likes making wall hangings, particularly those that incorporate animals.

Alison sometimes describes her work as painting with fabrics. She works long hours and sometimes her family does not approve – but it is something that she has to do.
